Another Eight Hours of Comp Time Coming

Over the Thanksgiving week, Gov. Robert F. McDonnell announced his plans to close state offices on Dec. 26, the day after Christmas. Because the University of Virginia is already observing that day as a holiday, the eight hours will be awarded as compensatory time for all Academic Division, full-time and part-time salaried faculty and staff.

Leave balances will show the eight additional hours awarded on Dec. 17, in order to make the leave available for Dec. 26, the day intended.

This leave is in addition to the eight hours announced on Nov. 16, hours that were awarded for Dec. 31. Again, because U.Va. already planned that day as a holiday, the eight hours were awarded as comp time on Nov. 5.

Eligible employees must have approval in advance from their supervisors to use the comp time. Supervisors are encouraged to be as flexible as possible in granting leave requests, especially during holiday periods, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Patrick Hogan wrote in emails to staff about the additional time off.

For 12-month faculty, the additional leave should be worked out with individual managers; see the provost’s policy on leave for information. Hours for part-time qualifying employees will be pro-rated.
