April 24 is Deadline to Make Screening Appointments for McGuffey Reading Center's Summer Program

April 16, 2009 — The McGuffey Reading Center's Summer Reading Program will be held July 6-24. Children will be screened throughout April for a spot in the program.

Each child who participates in the program will work in a small-group tutoring session with a graduate student in reading education. The graduate students work closely with a clinic supervisor who is already a reading specialist to develop an intensive individualized instructional program to best meet the needs of the child.

"I am so thankful for the McGuffey Reading Center. I can't thank the tutor enough for the help provided my son," wrote the parent of a former participant in the program.

A child who took part in the program said, "I am a better reader. I can figure words out better and can read faster."

To make a screening appointment, contact Tisha Hayes at 434-982-2021 or hayes@virginia.edu by April 24.

The center will start accepting children into the program by the end of the month. The application fee is $15; tuition is $450.

The McGuffey Reading Center, the oldest organization of its kind in the United States, is part of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia.
