May 29, 2009 — University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III will deliver keynote remarks at the third International Conference on World-Class Universities in Shanghai, China, in November.
Sponsored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the conference is a gathering of researchers, university leaders and policymakers from around the world who convene to discuss the challenges of managing and building world-class universities as well as strategies for success.
Casteen was invited by conference officials following their review of some 70 presentation proposals for the conference. He will speak about effective university management during difficult economic times. Casteen has led the University through a number of tough financial times – including a series of state budget cuts and the current global financial crisis.
"In the United States and around the world, universities are struggling to ensure that we sustain excellence in teaching, research and service during the hardest economic circumstances that the world has seen since 1929," Casteen said. "The decision to focus this World-Class Universities Conference on this important topic is timely. The work done in universities pays off in many ways – job creation, new applications for research, and more ways to create resources for government and for the private sector. This conference acknowledges that we are all in this together."
This is the first year that the University has been invited to participate in the conference. In addition to Casteen, Dr. Arthur Garson Jr., executive vice president and provost, and Gowher Rizvi, vice provost for international programs, have been invited.
The conference will include a special session for the release of the annual rankings of world universities by the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. They will include the Academic Ranking of World Universities – 2009; the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Broad Subject Fields – 2009; and a new Academic Ranking of World Universities by Selected Subject Fields – 2009.
