The Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra has been under the leadership of Kate Tamarkin as music director since 2006.

For its 39th season, the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra, under the musical direction of Kate Tamarkin, will present a variety of masterworks for an enriching musical experience.

Highlights of the 2013-14 season, aptly titled “A Musical Kaleidoscope,” include Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” Suite, Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished,” Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn, Maurice Ravel’s “Mother Goose Suite,” Richard Wagner’s Overture to “Rienzi” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47.

Conducted by Michael Slon, the University Singers will join the orchestra in observing the 200th birthday of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi with two performances of his sweeping “Requiem.” Soprano Christina Pier, mezzo-soprano Lucille Beer, tenor Scott Six and baritone Mark Owen Davis will join the singers.

Additional guest artists for this season’s musical kaleidoscope include world-renowned pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25; master violinist Daniel Sender, performing Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3; and trombonist Nathan Dishman, who will present the world premiere performance of “London Town Fantasy” by Virginia composer Antonio Garcia.

In December, the family concerts, presented by the University Singers, welcome in the season with a program of cherished carols and holiday merriment.

For those wanting to learn as much as listen, free lectures will be presented 45 minutes prior to each concert. These popular lectures by Richard Will, who chairs the McIntire Department of Music in U.Va.’s College of Arts & Sciences, provide a behind-the-scenes look at the classical music being presented. The Sept. 27 lecture and all Saturday lectures will take place in Minor Hall; Sunday lectures will be held in the forum at Monticello High School, with no lecture on April 26.

The orchestra has been under Tamarkin’s artistic leadership since 2006, captivating audiences and garnering frequent standing ovations. It is supported through a unique partnership between the Charlottesville Symphony Society, a private nonprofit corporation, and the McIntire Department of Music.
