City Police to Restrict Parking Close to U.Va. April 6 for Charlottesville Marathon

The Charlottesville Marathon will be held Saturday, with some restrictions to parking near the University of Virginia.

Lt. Ronnie Roberts, with Charlottesville Police Department, said that parking will be restricted on both sides of Lambeth Avenue and on the south side of Grady Avenue from 6 a.m. to around 1 p.m. He said cars parked in the temporary no parking zones would be towed by Charlottesville Wrecker, which may be called at 434-295-1107.

The race starts at the Omni Hotel at 6:30 a.m. and ends at the Downtown Mall, with a route that takes in West Main Street, Rugby Road, the footbridge over Emmet Street by University Hall, Old Ivy Road, Old Garth Road, Rose Hill Drive, through McIntire Park, Preston Avenue and along the Rivanna River.

At the beginning of the race, city side streets will be closed, but once runners enter the county, at about the five kilometer mark, the course will be open to vehicles for the remainder of the race. During the race, police and volunteers will control traffic, and race participants should run on the left side of the roadway unless instructed otherwise.

“By 1 p.m., everything with the race should be concluded,” Roberts said.

U.Va.’s Department of Parking and Transportation said the marathon should not affect the University Transit System bus routes.
