Economic Recovery Is Focus of ABC 'This Week'/Miller Center Special on Sunday

April 26, 2012 — A special edition of ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," produced with the University of Virginia's Miller Center, will air Sunday and focus on America's economic recovery and whether it is built to last.

Held before a live studio audience at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., the program will bring together guests from business, government and journalism to discuss this important issue.

Scheduled panelists include:

• Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard
• Jennifer Granholm, former governor of Michigan
• Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist
• Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google
• David Walker, former comptroller general
• George Will, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist

In the Charlottesville area, the program airs Sunday at 9 a.m. on WVAW.

The panel will take questions from social media. Questions can be submitted by Friday afternoon via Twitter @ThisWeekABC and @Miller_Center and on Facebook pages for "This Week" and the Miller Center.

"There's no issue of greater importance facing the nation now than where the economy is headed and what needs to be done to fully recover from the worst recession since the Great Depression," Stephanopoulos said.

Gerald L. Baliles, director and CEO of the Miller Center and former governor of Virginia, said the economy is the No. 1 issue on voters' minds.

"We're pleased that the Miller Center is partnering with George Stephanopoulos and This Week to tackle this all-important topic," he said. "Our hope is that we can give viewers something they can't find anywhere else – an informed, civil, balanced discussion of an issue that affects all of our lives."

"This Week with George Stephanopoulos" and the Miller Center are teaming up to produce a series of programs on the key issues of the 2012 election.

The Miller Center will create educational materials for each show topic, including white papers and blog posts written by leading scholars and lessons plans that middle- and high-school teachers can use to teach students about election issues.
