Forum Allows Graduate Students to Present Their Research

March 18, 2008 — University of Virginia graduate student researchers will present their work Wednesday, March 19 at Newcomb Hall.

Sponsored by the Graduate Student Council, the eighth annual Robert J. Huskey Graduate Research Exhibition at Newcomb Hall will feature poster presentations from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Newcomb Ballroom, and individual presentations in the South Meeting Room, the Board Room, the Commonwealth Room and rooms 168 and 396.

"This is to encourage and display graduate student research," said William Bradley McConnell, one of the graduate students who organized this year's exhibit. "We have boosted the prize money and increased the number of entries. This year we have more than 100 exhibitors from the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences."

David Hondula, another one of the organizers, said some graduate students may feel isolated in their field. He hopes the wide variety of presenters will encourage more collaborative work.

"Interdisciplinary research can build bridges between departments," he said.

Awards will be given for the top presentations in both paper and poster formats in each of four categories: arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, biological and biomedical sciences, and physical sciences and mathematics.

Arts and humanities research presentations will be made in the Commonwealth Room in two sessions, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Biological and biomedical science presentations will be made in three sessions, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Board Room and from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. in room 369. Physical science and mathematics presentations will be made in two sessions, from 10 a.m. to noon in the South Meeting Room and from 2:20 to 4 p.m. in the Board Room. Social and behavioral sciences presentations will be made in two sessions, from 10 a.m. to noon in room 168 and from 1 to 3 p.m. in the South Meeting Room.

Roseanne M. Ford, associate vice president for research and graduate studies, will give a keynote address at 4 p.m. in the South Meeting Room. Her talk will be followed by the awards presentation.
