William H. Goodwin Jr. is transitioning from the assignment of senior adviser to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors to an appointed member, a familiar position for the Richmond-based businessman.

Gov. Robert F. McDonnell on Monday appointed Goodwin to complete the unexpired term of R.J. Kirk, who resigned in October. In June, McDonnell had appointed Goodwin – who previously served on the board from 1996 to 2004 – as a nonvoting special adviser to the body.

“Bill Goodwin’s previous experience as a board member and his longtime commitment to the University in a broad range of capacities will bring vast experience and valuable institutional memory to the tasks before the board, and all of us will benefit from his expertise,” President Teresa A. Sullivan said Tuesday. “I look forward to working with Bill and the board as we strengthen and advance the University in the years ahead.”

Goodwin was first appointed to the board in 1996 by Gov. George Allen. During his original two-term tenure, Goodwin chaired the Finance Committee and the University of Virginia Investment Management Company. He also served on the Executive Committee, the Medical Center Operating Board, the Buildings and Grounds Committee and the U.Va. College at Wise Committee.

He previously chaired the Board of Trustees of the Darden School of Business.

Rector Helen E. Dragas described having someone of Goodwin’s stature join the board as a “true privilege.”

“From his prior board service and more recently as a special adviser, he understands well the complexities of higher education and health care delivery and has already made significant contributions to our policies,” Dragas said. “His breadth and depth of experience and wisdom will make a real difference as the University strives for ever higher levels of excellence.”

Goodwin is currently chairman of the board of CCA Industries Inc., a holding company whose assets include CCA Financial, Bag Boy Company, Pompanette Inc. and various investments and real estate holdings, including the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.

“I appreciate being appointed to the Board of Visitors by Governor McDonnell, and I look forward to this opportunity,” Goodwin said. “I am hopeful that the University can come together for a common purpose of making U.Va. even better.”

Goodwin earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in 1962 and received his MBA from Darden in 1966.

He has been deeply involved in philanthropic efforts at U.Va. and other institutions. In 2001, Goodwin and his wife, Alice T. Goodwin, donated $3.9 million for cancer research at U.Va. Medical Center. In 2002, the Goodwins gave $6 million to accelerate clinical trials of promising cancer therapies.

In 1999, the Goodwins pledged $13.3 million to Darden, and the couple’s ongoing support fueled the planning and construction of the Darden Grounds.
