December 3, 2009 — A memorial service will be held Saturday in Charlottesville for John Jones, a University of Virginia medical student who died Nov. 25 while caving in Utah.
The service will be at 2 p.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel on Airport Road. The chapel is at the corner of Airport Road and Timberwood Boulevard, approximately a half-mile west of U.S. 29.
Jones, 26, became wedged head-down 700 feet into a cave while on a spelunking expedition with 10 others. Dozens of rescuers tried unsuccessfully to free him over 28 hours. Officials announced that the cave is to be sealed because any effort to recover his body would be too dangerous.
For the past two years, Jones, a native of St. George, Utah, attended the U.Va. School of Medicine, hoping to pursue a career as a pediatric cardiologist. He, his wife Emily and their 13-month-old daughter had gone home to Utah for the Thanksgiving holiday and to share the news that another baby is expected in June.
His family has created a memorial Web site.
