As new hotels spring up around town, an old motel soon will be coming down.

The Econo Lodge at 400 Emmet Street, across from the John Paul Jones Arena, closed July 31.  Demolition of the building – which dates to the mid-1960s and is currently owned by the University of Virginia Foundation – is slated to begin as early as Monday.

There are currently no development plans for the site, according to U.Va.’s Office of Community Relations. Once the demolition is complete, the area will be landscaped with appropriate plantings and grasses.

The motel’s pool also will be demolished, but two nearby restaurants will remain open.

Motel furnishings, fixtures and other usable items are being salvaged for sale to other hotels. Items not sold will be donated to area nonprofits, including the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity.

Containment fencing will be in place during the demolition, and surrounding trees and vegetation will not be disturbed during the work. Residents and businesses located in the area are not expected to experience power or utility disruptions, Community Relations said.

During the actual knocking down of the building, the work is expected to generate significant sound . Work will occur on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.; weekend work is not anticipated.

Demolition is expected to be complete in October.
