Nominations for the annual Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards are due Feb. 25

These annual awards recognize excellence of character and service to humanity, and are given each year to one woman and one man from the graduating class (undergraduate or graduate) and to one non-student member of the University community.

The New York Southern Society – Sullivan served as its first president – and a Sullivan Memorial Committee established the awards in 1925 in memory of the man who became a prominent lawyer, businessman and philanthropist in New York in the late 19th century. The society and selected colleges and universities jointly arrange for the issue of medallions, which are to be perpetual reminders of the award’s namesake.

Sullivan, born in Indiana in 1826, is recalled as a man who “reached out both hands in constant helpfulness” to others. This award is intended to honor those who have been described as “unsung heroes” or “angels among us.” These are the students and University community members who strive each day to better the lives of those around them, but do so without thought of recognition or reward.
