University of Virginia President Teresa A. Sullivan has declared Nov. 1 to be “CVC Day” on Grounds to encourage employees to use the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign to support their favorite charities. The day will be marked with numerous efforts in various offices across Grounds.

The campaign is the annual workplace giving program that enables University and state employees to support their favorite causes in areas that include health and human services, animal welfare and environmental programs.

“One hundred percent of gifts designated to a specific charity go to the charity with no administrative or overhead fees,” said Jim Fitzgerald, associate director in U.Va.’s community relations office and U.Va.’s campaign chair.

Through the campaign, employees can donate via payroll deduction or give with a check, credit card or cash using the pledge card delivered in the drive’s signature red envelope.

Nine of the top 10 designated charities in last year’s statewide CVC serve the Charlottesville region, including the Charlottesville Free Clinic, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, the Charlottesville-Albemarle and Fluvanna SPCAs and the United Way Thomas Jefferson Area.

In 2012, U.Va. employees donated $1,072,000, and contributions through the campaign since 1999 have exceeded $9 million.

This is the second year that Sullivan has declared CVC Day at U.Va. In addition to the declaration, Sullivan and her office are offering three University employees who participate in the campaign the opportunity to enjoy a men’s basketball game, a women’ s basketball game and a John Paul Jones Arena event. Dates for each of the games and the arena event will be announced soon.

To be eligible to win the tickets, one needs only to participate in the CVC.  Three names will be randomly drawn in December, and winners will be notified shortly after the drawing.

“Our employees are generous, giving back to our local and state communities in numerous ways,” Sullivan said. “Through the CVC, we come together in support of the causes that matter most to us. I encourage employees to join me and thousands of others across Grounds in the CVC at U.Va. Collectively, we can have a significant impact in our area and throughout the commonwealth.”
