U.Va. Architecture Dean's Forum Lecture to Focus on Dutch Urban Sprawl

March 23, 2011 — Rainer Johann, a Berlin-based urbanist, will present a Dean's Forum Lecture, "Tussenland Meets Sprawl: The Urban Sprawl and Smart Growth Discourse in Light of a Dutch Phenomenon." The lecture will be held at the University of Virginia School of Architecture on April 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Campbell Hall, room 160.

The lecture is sponsored by the U.Va. International Visiting Scholarship Grant Program.

Johann will address the rapid and expansive growth in The Netherlands' Tussenland, or "land-in-between," over the last decade, and the effects this socio-economic urban phenomenon has had on Dutch national spatial planning.

Johann is an assistant professor at Hafen-City University in Hamburg, Germany. He received his master of arts in urbanism from the Delft University of Technology. He practices and teaches in the field of urban research, urban planning and urban design in Germany and the Netherlands. His ongoing research examines the socio-economic and spatial implications of urban design and planning for aviation facilities, airports and cities focusing on the metropolitan region of Hamburg.
