U.Va. Art Museum Hosts Saturday Tour by Matthew Affron on June 4

May 26, 2011 — Curator Matthew Affron will give a Saturday Special Tour of the U.Va. Art Museum's exhibition "Society Portraits: Andy Warhol's Photographic Legacy" on June 4, from 2 to 3 p.m.

"Society Portraits" features 95 photographs given to the U.Va. Art Museum in 2009 by the Andy Warhol Foundation. The images on view reflect the range of original photographs produced by Warhol, including formal studio portraits, informal snapshots of people at parties and other subjects relating to the artist's everyday life.

Photography was in many ways at the heart of both Warhol's working method and his sensibility. The image of the human face was a perennial theme for the artist. In his tour, Affron will discuss the interplay of photography and portraiture in Warhol's work of the 1970s and 1980s.

Affron is associate professor in the McIntire Department of Art in U.Va.'s College of Arts & Sciences and curator of modern art at the museum. He most recently co-organized the exhibition "Matisse, Picasso and Modern Art in Paris," which opened at the museum in January 2009 and subsequently traveled to three other venues in Virginia.

The U.Va. Art Museum offers its Saturday Special Tours on the third or fourth Saturday of every month. These tours offer the opportunity to join faculty, curators and scholars as they explore a variety of focused topics related to museum collections and exhibitions.

Saturday Special Tours are free and open to the public. For information, call 434-243-2050 or e-mail museumoutreach@virginia.edu. The museum is located at 155 Rugby Road, one block from the Rotunda.
