May 11, 2009 — The University of Virginia's McIntire Department of Art will celebrate the life of the late James Hagan, founder of the department's sculpture and new media concentrations and professor from 1963 to 2001, with an exhibit of his work during Alumni Weekend.

"HAGAN! 1936-2008, The Intervening Years: Sculpture. Drawings, New Media, Boats," will be on view May 22 through June 7 in Ruffin Hall Gallery. The exhibit will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on the weekend of June 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A reception will be held June 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

Students and friends are encouraged to share a memory or anecdote concerning Hagan, who died Sept. 13, for an anecdote/memory wall, which will be included in the exhibition. The collection will be installed unedited. Submit single-page submissions as an attachment to Millie Dean at mwd2f@virginia.edu, or send to: Millie Dean, McIntire Department of Art, P.O. Box 400130, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4130.

During the same dates and hours, a group exhibit, "June Salmagundi," from the graduating studio art majors who have been chosen as the 2009-10 Aunspaugh Post-Baccalaureate Fifth-Year Program fellows will be on view in the "RuffStuff" gallery on the first floor of Ruffin Hall. The exhibit includes works by Ashley Chipman (cinematography), Allison Harbin (photography), Rachel Singel (printmaking), Jeffrey Trueblood (painting) and Ashley Williams (painting/sculpture).

Tours of Ruffin Hall will be given June 6 at 10 and 11 a.m. Tours leave from Ruffin Gallery on the third floor.

The events are supported by the McIntire Department of Art, U.Va. Alumni Association, Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts, and the associate dean for the arts and humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences.
