U.Va. to Host Delegation from King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia

December 14, 2010 — The University of Virginia's Curry School of Education and U.Va.'s Teaching Resource Center will host 15 faculty members from King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia for workshops Dec. 15-21 in Bavaro Hall.

The visiting faculty represent a variety of disciplines, including education, medicine, veterinary medicine and business. The goal of their visit is to learn new teaching strategies and technologies used in teaching at the college level.

"We are hoping to share the best strategies the University of Virginia can offer to engage college-level students in interactive classroom participation to maximize the learning of students in the college classrooms," said Carolyn Callahan, Commonwealth Professor of Education at the Curry School and organizer of the workshops. "We will be sharing strategies that require students go beyond the simple absorption of information to engage in critical thinking and problem solving and to learn strategies for effective research and community involvement.

"The Teaching Resource Center and our other faculty have so much to offer in models of good instruction to a University seeking to break the traditional modes of passive lecture strategies," she said.

Media are invited to Bavaro Hall, room 116, on Thursday, Dec. 16 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Callahan and other participants will be available to be interviewed from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Media can to take photos and/or video during the morning and afternoon sessions from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m.
