November 23, 2009 — India's ambassador to the United States, Meera Shankar, will speak Dec. 2 at the University of Virginia, continuing the Ambassador's Speakers Forum.

Meera's 5 p.m. talk, sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs, will take place in room 120 of Rouss Hall and is free and open to the public.

Counterterrorism is one of the big issues facing India today. Meera's visit to U.Va. comes nearly one year after attacks in Mumbai killed at least 160 people.

Gowher Rizvi, U.Va.'s vice provost for international programs, has hosted several ambassadors to the United States this fall, including Husain Haqqani of Pakistan and Friis Arne Petersen of Denmark, as well as Nobel Peace laureate Mohammed Yunus of Bangladesh.

In addition to the ambassador's forum, the Center for International Studies is wrapping up its fall speaker series. Dr. Richard Guerrant, Thomas H. Hunter Professor of International Medicine at U.Va., will speak Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. in room 223 of Rouss Hall. The title of his talk is "A Declaration of Interdependence: The Steepening Threat to Health & Survival." This event is also free and open to the public.
