Thanksgiving. Black Friday. Cyber Monday. And now, get ready for “GivingTuesday.”

In the spirit of the season of giving, last year a national organization of nonprofit groups launched the charitable #GivingTuesday, which established the first GivingTuesday – a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season.

Inspired by the success of this national day of generosity, on Dec. 3 U.Va.’s Young Alumni Council will launch the first-ever “Giving TueHoosDay.”

The council designated this date as a time for alumni to give back to the University as a way of remembering the past and investing in the future. The council is encouraging alumni from the five most recently graduated classes to give back to the University in this first-ever online event.

To participate, alumni and friends can go here on Dec. 3 to make a gift of any amount to any area of the University – or fulfill an existing pledge using a simple online form.

The council’s effort received an early boost from Carr’s Hill. After learning Nov. 15 that the Board of Visitors had approved a 2 percent raise for her – as most state employees received this fiscal year – U.Va. President Teresa A. Sullivan announced that she would contribute $10,000 to the Young Alumni Council in the form of a matching gift to benefit the AccessUVa financial aid program.

“Increasing philanthropic support for the University is more important than ever,” she said. “I applaud the Young Alumni Council’s efforts and wish them success on Giving TueHoosDay. Their efforts help build awareness and attract gifts for so many important purposes.”

Sullivan’s gift already has been matched by an anonymous $10,000 contribution, also earmarked for need-based financial aid.

“The Young Alumni Council is grateful for the generous support of President Sullivan and many of our alumni leaders as we pilot this one-day giving challenge, Giving TueHoosDay,” said council member Ashley Cullop, a 2006 graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences and a 2010 and 2012 graduate of the Curry School of Education.

“It is our hope that the loyalty and passion our fellow ’Hoos feel for the University shines through on this day of giving back,” said Cullop, who is overseeing the online project with fellow council member Darius Nabors.

Other matching gifts include three separate matches, dollar for dollar, by Tiki and Ronde Barber for the first $5,000 given to any U.Va. school, any of the University’s affiliated foundations or organizations (listed on the Giving TueHoosDay form), and any of the four University priorities.

To help meet these matches and others listed on the Giving TueHoosDay site, gifts must be received by midnight PST on Dec. 3.

For 12 hours beginning at 10 a.m. EST, hourly incentives will be offered to encourage giving. The earlier in the day someone gives, the more chances there are to win.

Among the prizes: two tickets to the McIntire School of Commerce’s football suite for one 2014 football game (to be given away at noon), a basketball signed by the 2013-14 U.Va. men’s basketball team (2 p.m.), one free lifetime membership to the U.Va. Alumni Association (5 p.m.), two tickets in the president’s suite for the U.Va. women’s basketball Jan. 19 game against Florida State, including soft drinks and snacks throughout the game (6 p.m.), and dinner for four at Pavilion IV (7 p.m.).

In addition to specifically targeting the five youngest classes for GivingTueHoosDay, the U.Va. Alumni Association is encouraging all social media accounts around the University to post about the event, with the aim of receiving gifts from an even broader alumni base.
