U.Va. Students to Help Local Charities Through Sofa Shuffle

Listen to the UVA Today Radio Show report on this story by Rebecca Arrington:

May 5, 2010 — The University of Virginia's annual Sofa Shuffle helps off-Grounds students support area charities by encouraging them to donate and recycle unwanted furniture and household items at the end of the academic year.

To participate, students should bring their items to one of seven collection points on May 24 and May 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, where collection trucks from the Salvation Army and The Habitat Store will receive them. Volunteers will assist in loading materials onto the charities' trucks.

The collection points are:

•    The Madhouse at 780 Madison Ave.
•    516 Brandon Ave.
•    303 14th St. N.W. (St. Edwards Court)
•    Crossroads Apartments at the intersection of Jefferson Park and Fontaine avenues
•    1815 Jefferson Park Ave.
•    Grand Marc on 15th Street
•    1213 Wertland St.

Last year, more than 300 substantial items of furniture were collected.

The Sofa Shuffle is the off-Grounds equivalent to the Chuck It For Charity collection that occurs on Grounds. It is sponsored by U.Va.'s Community Relations Office, the Office of Off-Grounds Housing, the Blue Ridge Apartment Council, The Salvation Army and The Habitat Store.
