U.Va.'s Fralin Museum of Art Hosts Teachers' Party to Introduce Programs Aug. 28

August 10, 2012 — The University of Virginia's Fralin Museum of Art invites teachers in all disciplines from local and regional public and independent schools to a reception to be held Aug. 28 at 5 p.m.

Teachers can choose from three programs on utilizing museum exhibitions as a teaching resource to enhance and supplement the classroom curriculum.

The evening also will offer a preview of four new exhibitions: "Ancient Masters in Modern Styles: Chinese Ink Paintings from the 16th-21st Centuries," "The Valley of the Shadow: American Landscapes in the Time of the Civil War," "Jean Hélion: Reality and Abstraction" and "Making Science Visible: The Photography of Berenice Abbott."

After an overview of the museum's public programs, the evening will include presentations tailored to specific subject areas:

• Writing teachers are invited to view the art selected for Writer's Eye 2012 and a presentation on teaching creative writing.
• Curator Hannah Rogers will offer a special presentation for STEM teachers on the "Making Science Visible" exhibition.
• Associate Academic Curator Aimee Hunt will lead a discussion on past and future integration of museum exhibitions into the humanities curriculum.

A light supper will be served after the programs. The Teachers' Party is free and open to educators across the region. Teachers should RSVP by Aug. 24 with their school affiliation and choice of program to museumoutreach@virginia.edu or 434-243-2050.

The museum is located at 155 Rugby Rd., a short walk from the Rotunda, across the street from Madison Bowl. Free parking will be available at the Culbreth Parking Garage on Culbreth Road.
