WTJU's Classical Marathon and pledge drive will be held Dec. 3-9.

WTJU 91.1 FM, the University of Virginia’s community radio station, is holding its annual Classical Marathon and pledge drive Dec. 3-9.

During the holiday (and exam studying) season, WTJU-FM will once again offer beautiful classical music and the opportunity to support compelling, high-quality radio programming found nowhere else in Central Virginia. The goal: raise $40,000.

“The station’s volunteer classical announcers will be at their creative best as they delight you with some of the world’s finest music – from early treasures to modern masterworks, from solo instrumental pieces to great symphonies, from a cappella motets to Wagner’s ‘Tristan and Isolde,’” Deborah Murray, director of WTJU’s classical department, said.

The programming will feature “Chamber Music Middays” Monday through Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. The series will progress from solo works to sextets, with an instrument added each day. Monday’s offering is solo piano music of Claude Debussy, the master of impressionistic tone painting.

This is the one time each year when WTJU’s classical department asks for financial support from its listeners.

“You can be sure that every dollar provided will bring tangible improvements,” station manager Nathan Moore said. “This year, for example, WTJU was able to install a new transmitter that significantly increased our signal strength. We also purchased equipment that enables us to broadcast concerts live from area venues and to interview artists on location.”

WTJU encourages listeners to donate online or by calling 434-924-3959 during the marathon. Donations are tax-deductible, and go a long way toward ensuring WTJU stays strong and independent.

WTJU presents original, rich and diverse programming of music and other forms of expression free from the direct constraints of commercial interests, reflecting the broadest educational goals of the University, Moore said.
