Thomas Jefferson Foundation Visiting Professor Lecture To Be Held at U.Va. School of Architecture

April 5, 2011 — Marlon Blackwell, distinguished professor and department head in the School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas, will give the University of Virginia School of Architecture's Thomas Jefferson Foundation Visiting Professor Lecture on April 18, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in Campbell Hall, room 153.

"Evolutionary Typologies and Other Mutations" will explore the work of Blackwell's firm, Marlon Blackwell Architect.

Blackwell is a visiting faculty member in U.Va.'s School of Architecture this semester, where he holds the Thomas Jefferson Chair. The position was created to bring highly regarded architects to the school to share their unique skills and perspectives to students.

Blackwell, a fellow of the American Institute of Architecture, is a nationally and internationally recognized teacher and practicing architect. Working outside the architectural mainstream, his architecture is based in design strategies that celebrate vernaculars and that draw upon them, and that seek to transgress conventional boundaries for architecture.

The recipient of numerous American Institute of Architecture design awards and the ar + d prize from Architectural Review, Blackwell is featured in "An Architecture of the Ozarks: The Works of Marlon Blackwell" (Princeton Architectural Press, 2005) and "The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture" (2004 & 2008). His work has also appeared in publications such as Architecture, Arquine, A+U, Detail, Dwell, Southern Living, Summa+ and Architectural Record (with the honor of having his design for the Keenan TowerHouse featured on the cover of the February 2001 issue).
