'Charlottesville Collects Arts of the Himalayas' to Open June 6 at the University of Virginia Art Museum

June 3, 2008 — "Charlottesville Collects Arts of the Himalayas" responds to the interest in Himalayan art and culture that exists in the University of Virginia academic and Charlottesville communities. Featured in the exhibition are selections from the University of Virginia Art Museum's growing collection of Tibetan paintings, sculpture and ritual objects. Tibetan, Nepalese and Buthanese artworks from local collectors, University faculty and students also contribute to the exhibit and show specific aspects of Himalayan culture, religion and arts. The exhibition, organized by the 2007-08 Luzak-Lindner Graduate Student Fellow Elena Pakhoutova, opens June 6 and runs through Aug. 3.

Pakhutova will give a gallery talk on Sunday, June 8, at 2 p.m. in the museum.

The University of Virginia Art Museum is free and open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m. Parking is available on Bayly Drive off Rugby Road, or in the Central Grounds Parking Garage on Emmet Street.
