The University of Virginia has issued offers of admission to 2,409 students in the regular-decision pool, closing out this year’s three application cycles.

Students around the country and the world received their acceptance notifications last week, offering a glimmer of good news as the world continues to come to terms with the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Dean of Admissions Greg Roberts said he recognizes this is an extraordinarily challenging time and sent good wishes to every student who applied to UVA this year.

“Our first priority is the health and safety of students and their families. I’m sure this isn’t how anyone imagined their senior year would wrap up, but the Office of Admission is here to assist in any way,” he said. “We hope students will contact us if there are questions about UVA or next steps, especially as we approach the summer.

“We are humbled and grateful that so many talented, accomplished students are interested in UVA. These students will shape our University, our community and this country as we emerge from this crisis in the weeks and months and years ahead.”

The Class of 2024 is shaping up to be more diverse than ever, Roberts said. “Nearly 47% of the offers to U.S. citizens who reported a race were made to minority students, which is up from 43% last year. This class of admitted students is the most racially diverse in University history.”

Self-reported Caucasians make up 45.7% of the offers to UVA.

The number of admission offers to first-generation students increased to 12.7% of the total, up from 11.4% for the Class of 2023.

The offers were made to students in 71 countries and 53 U.S. states and territories. In-state students were offered admission at a rate of 32.5% compared with an offer rate of 15.4% to out-of-state students.

In total, more than 41,000 students applied for admission to the University for the 2020-21 year. The mean SAT score for in-state-students offered admission was 1,419; for out-of-state students, it was 1,466.

This year, UVA reintroduced a binding, early decision admissions cycle, in addition to its previous early action and regular decision programs. In early decision, 751 students were offered admission in December and agreed to enroll. In early action, 5,260 students received offers in January; they have until May 1 to accept, as do those offered admission during the regular cycle.

As the University has canceled all on-Grounds events and courses have gone fully online because of the coronavirus, the Office of Admission will be unable to hold its traditional “Days on the Lawn” open house programs, Roberts said. However, new virtual programs and events are being developed that will connect admitted students with UVA faculty, students and alumni and introduce them to the University.

“The admission team has been working tirelessly over the past few weeks to develop opportunities for admitted students to get to know UVA and our community,” Roberts said “From virtual tours to livestreamed faculty panels to UVA student videos on TikTok to Instagram takeovers, we will be connecting admitted students to UVA virtually.”

Roberts is encouraging admitted students to visit UVA’s Student Experience website to learn more about life at UVA and the educational opportunities the school has to offer, as well as what Charlottesville is like as a neighbor and a University partner. Admitted students may also wish to visit the frequently asked questions for the Class of 2024.
