Cornel West and Robert P. George, well-known scholars, philosophers and public intellectuals, will kick off the “UVA250 Presents” series Thursday evening with “Disagree. Discuss. Understand,” a conversation on civic friendship, intellectual humility and truth-seeking across political divides.
UVA250 will be a year-long celebration exploring how Thomas Jefferson's university played a critical role in the growth of a new nation. It will complement state events commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
West and George, the authors of “Truth Matters: A Dialogue on Fruitful Disagreement in an Age of Division,” will explore how universities can foster rigorous, good-faith engagement and strengthen the foundations of democratic life.
The event will take place in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Registration for a limited number of seats is still available, and registration for livestreaming of the event is also available.
The event is sponsored by the Office of the President, UVA250, the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the UVA Office of Engagement, the Karsh Institute of Democracy and the UVA Miller Center of Public Affairs.
