To be the best, Dylan Dietrich had to beat the best.
And now the University of Virginia tennis player sits on the throne all by himself.
Dietrich, a junior who paired with Wahoo teammate Måns Dahlberg to win the NCAA doubles championship in the fall, is the newly minted No. 1-ranked singles player in the country after knocking off previously top-ranked Trevor Svajda of Southern Methodist University in three sets – 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 – on Sunday at the Boar’s Head Resort.
Above the rest.

Dietrich, who entered the match with a No. 2 ranking, is the third player in program history to reach No. 1 in both singles and doubles in his career, joining Somdev Devvarman (2007) and Jarmere Jenkins (2013).
On Tuesday, Dietrich, a Switzerland native, was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season and fourth time in his career.
Dietrich and the Cavaliers enter this weekend’s matches at the University of California, Berkley, and No. 21 Stanford University ranked third in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.
Their next home match is March 13 against Duke University at the Boar’s Head. Admission is free.
