News in brief: UVA alumna prepares to make history in Richmond

University of Virginia alumna Abigail Spanberger began the week chatting with late-night talk-show host Stephen Colbert, and she’ll end the week making history as the first woman sworn in as Virginia’s governor.

She’s also the first Wahoo elected to the office since Republican Jim Gilmore moved into the executive mansion in 1998.

The 2001 College of Arts & Sciences graduate will be sworn in Saturday at noon. In another first, her husband, Adam, also a UVA graduate, will become the state’s first first gentleman. UVA Today will be at the inauguration, with our story publishing online Tuesday and featured in Wednesday’s Daily Report email.
