The University of Virginia submitted its first quarterly report to the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice late last month, in accordance with an agreement to suspend civil rights inquiries into the institution.
The report, submitted Dec. 29 by then-interim President Paul Mahoney, offers an update on the ongoing review of UVA of policies, practices and procedures that relate to civil rights laws.
In October, UVA entered into an agreement with the United States that, while maintaining the University’s academic freedom, requires the University to affirm quarterly that it continues its efforts to ensure compliance with civil rights laws. The agreement did not require UVA to pay fines or penalties and does not require any government monitoring.
The first report includes information from the University’s Civil Rights Law Compliance Review, which the UVA administration initiated in June. The University hired the law firm McGuire Woods to oversee the ongoing review and to make suggestions for how to better align policies, programs and practices with civil rights law and related federal orders and guidance.
