Early Thursday evening, more than 20,000 students from around the globe learned whether they had been admitted to the University of Virginia’s Class of 2022 via the early action application process.

Out of the 21,573 early applicants, 6,000 received the news they were hoping for – an offer rate of 27.8 percent. Last year, UVA had an offer rate of 28.9 percent for early action applicants.

Many of those not admitted Thursday will have a second chance; their applications were deferred to the regular admissions cycle.

The SAT scores of accepted early action students rose from a middle-50-percent range of 1350 to 1500 last year to 1390 to 1520 this year.

Overall, 37,188 students – hailing from all 50 states and 147 countries – have applied for spots in this year’s entering class via both the early action and regular admissions processes, an increase of 1 percent above last year’s record pool.

Of those applicants, 11,739 are minorities, representing a 4 percent rise over last year; 4,483 would be the first in their families to attend college, a 10 percent increase from 2017.

Regular application decisions will be released by April 1. All students offered admission have until May 1 to accept their offers.

The enrollment target for the fall’s first-year class is 3,725 students.

Moments after the electronic admissions notifications went live online, new students were flooding UVA’s social media channels with their admissions stories using the hashtag #UVA22.
