The incoming class of U.S. Navy ROTC midshipmen at the University of Virginia came to Charlottesville a week before their classmates for an orientation course that sets the foundation for their training over the next four years – training through which they develop discipline and camaraderie.

“They are learning the very basics and making the transition into military life,” said U.S. Navy Capt. Christopher C. Misner, commanding officer of the Naval ROTC program. “They are developing basic knowledge of the Navy and Marine Corps, marching skills, physical fitness, leadership skills and the ability to work as a unit. This is not a boot camp; it is just building a foundation for their four-year journey here at UVA and beyond.”

Taking part in the orientation were 23 first-year students, along with several upperclassmen who joined the ROTC program halfway through last year. They stayed at the Naval ROTC facilities at Maury Hall for the week, training from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
