Dr. Robert M. Carey, professor of medicine at the University of Virginia, has been named a Distinguished Scientist of the American Heart Association. Carey is a leader in the field of cardiovascular endocrinology, studying and treating hypertension for five decades. He also co-led the development of influential new guidelines on high blood pressure issued by the heart association and its collaborating organizations.
“A smart politician once told me that, in terms of his career, he keeps as many doors open for as long as he can. That’s what Cruz is doing,” said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. “Cruz wants to run for president again, but a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court isn’t a bad alternative to an iffy run for the White House and a tough reelection battle in 2024,” Sabato said.

Tele-cystoscopy has the potential to expand the availability of cystoscopy for bladder cancer surveillance to patients living in underserved areas, according to findings from a pilot study published in the Journal of Urology. Researchers from the University of Virginia and Cleveland Clinic conducted the pilot study to evaluate the clarity of the transmitted videos, APP proficiency, and diagnostic capability of the tele-cystoscopy.

Per Deadline, the movie is based on a 2015 article written for the New Yorker by Nathan Heller. The case revolves around the 1985 double murder of the Haysoms, who were found slain in their home. The Haysoms’ daughter Elizabeth was a college student studying at the University of Virginia. It was there she met Soering. Soering, the son of a German diplomat, started dating Haysom. 
The University of Virginia’s board of visitors on Friday unanimously passed a package of six resolutions, including removing the George Rogers Clark statue and the “Whispering Wall” Confederate monument and also providing context to the Thomas Jefferson statue near the Rotunda to include Jefferson’s ownership of slaves.

U.S. News & World Report placed UVA at No. 26 in its annual rankings of American universities released Monday. UVAwas at No. 28 last year following several years of ranking No. 25. Out of the country’s public colleges, UVA stayed at No. 4, behind the University of California-Los Angeles, the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
For public schools, UCLA took the top spot, followed by the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the University of Virginia.

The University of Virginia’s 2020 football schedule has changed again, and the Cavaliers will now have a home game in September. The Atlantic Coast Conference says UVA’s Saturday, November 14th game against Duke University has been rescheduled for Saturday, September 26th.

Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Health System is opening a $7 million comprehensive breast care center Oct. 12. The 18,500-square-foot center includes 32 patient rooms. It will offer surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, genetics, plastic surgery and radiology services.

While it wasn’t slated to count in the regular-season standings, the UVa men’s soccer team’s Friday home exhibition with Clemson was canceled after the Tigers reported two positive COVID-19 cases within their program. Three women have declared themselves the progressive candidates for the Elizabeth Board of Education election this November. Danielle Fienberg, Janice Figueroa and Natalie Hernandez officially launched their candidacy with a virtual campaign party August 28 with the slogan ‘Justice for Elizabeth.’ Figueroa was raised in Elizabeth and attended the Elizabeth Public Schools, having graduated from schools 19, 13, 28, 7 and Frank J. Cicarell Academy. Currently, she studies linguistics at the University of Virginia and is studying to obtain an ESL teaching certification. 
This time a year ago, Dr. Cameron Webb of Charlottesville had no idea he would be among the top contenders this fall for election to the U.S. House of Representatives. The 37-year-old Democrat, a former White House Fellow and physician at the University of Virginia Health System who holds both a medical degree and a law degree, is running in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District centered in the Piedmont region.
Political analyst Larry Sabato, founder and director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, said the presidential race will have strong coattails this year. He said if former Vice President Joe Biden wins “by a least a few points,” the Senate is likely to split 50-50 between the two parties, with Harris able to cast the tie-breaking vote. “A bigger Biden win would usher in a bigger Democratic majority,” Sabato said.
Home schooling has been on the rise in Virginia for many years. The number of homeschooled students reached nearly 45,000 in 2019; if homeschoolers were a school division, they would have comprised the seventh largest of Virginia’s 133 school divisions. Demographer Hamilton Lombard at the Demographics Research Group at the University of Virginia, expects the homeschool trend to continue.
