One way President Barack Obama hopes to reduce soaring health care costs is through promotion of overall wellness. There's a related idea cooking in Washington: a fat tax. According to a study by experts at the Urban Institute and the University of Virginia, a 10% excise or sales tax on fattening foods could raise $522 billion over the next 10 years.
A group of UVa students, alumni, and faculty are working on a project in Southeastern Virginia that is sure to create a few ripples in the water: the learning barge, a floating environmental learning center.
It was a Third World scene with an American setting. "There are areas of the country, and certainly Wise County is one of them, where there just aren't [enough] physicians," says Dr. Susan Kirk, an endocrinologist and diabetes specialist with the University of Virginia Health System. "We provide indigent care at the University of Virginia, but that's six hours away."

The 10th annual Remote Area Medical (RAM) Health Expedition opened to an army of people seeking free medical, dental and eye care services at the Wise County Fairgrounds on Friday.

The University of Virginia is poised to roll out a major fundraising campaign to support AccessUVa, its increasingly expensive and popular financial aid program. The program, launched five years ago, aims to make UVa affordable for all admitted students regardless of their family’s economic circumstance.
The University of Virginia recently announced the makeup of its search committee to succeed President John T. Casteen III — and what a task that will be. Mr. Casteen will retire next summer, after 20 years as leader of the school that now bears so much of his imprint.

With Harvard, Wharton, and other top schools planning to accept the GRE for admissions, cracks are beginning to show in the GMAT monopoly. The University of Virginia's Darden School is one of the schools that have recently become more open-minded about accepting the GRE.
Charlottesville and Albemarle County are jointly receiving nearly $6 million to help bolster programs targeting violence and substance-abuse prevention in schools and childhood development. The grant allows for the creation of 17 positions plus the ability to support eight University of Virginia graduate students who will do counseling.
When Craig Littlepage was promoted to Virginia’s director of athletics in 2001, his charge was to build a consistently performing top 10 athletic program. Littlepage’s quest is to find a way to remain in the top 10 neighborhood in a time when every college athletics program is being hit hard by the nation’s economic woes.
Efforts to streamline the application process have paid off with what one admission official suggests may be the most diverse and strongest class admitted to the University of Virginia.
