...At Saturday night's Bad Pants Bash, awards were given out to many people who go the extra mile in helping at the Children's Hospital. The 'Comeback Kid of the Year' was one of the special awards presented. This year, that award went to Charley and Amanda Batten, twin sisters from Orange County High School who battle kidney disease. ... "If UVa wasn't here, I would not be here. I thank everybody. Nurses, doctors, everybody," said Charley.
America's elementary school students seldom receive high-quality teaching that challenges them to think critically and solve problems, according to an extensive study led by University of Virginia education professor Robert Pianta. The study, published in the latest issue of Science, has tracked about 1,000 students in more than 25 states from age 3 to their current age of 17. It found that small-group instruction occurred in less than 10 percent of the students' first-, third- and fifth-grade classrooms and teachers lectured about 90 percent of the time.
The University of Virginia's Board of Visitors discussed a range of issues related to the university's requirements under Virginia's higher education restructuring legislation at its meeting Friday. In return for being given greater financial and operational autonomy, UVa agreed to meet certain obligations related to areas such as student access, affordability and financial practices. One requirement that generated a lot of discussion among board members Friday morning was UVa's commitment to enroll more transfers students from Virginia's community colleges.

The second-ranked Cavaliers changed that on Sunday, beating #5 North Carolina 6-1 to finish the season with a regular season record of 11-0. Virginia clinches the ACC Title for the fourth straight season with the win.
The University of Virginia is planning on raising its rates for in-state undergraduate tuition and fees 8.3 percent to $8,500 for the 2007-08 school year. University officials say the University's Board of Visitors also voted to increase out-of-state tuition by 7 percent raising it to $27,750. And if you add housing to the tuition and fees, those rates have gone up as well. There's a 7.9 percent increase for in-state students bringing their bill to $16,133. For out-of-state students the bill will increase by 7.1 percent to $35, 383...

Much of the research surrounding childhood asthma has sought new approaches to managing the disease. However, little was done to address other conditions that often appear along with asthma including depression and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which can negatively affect a child's ability to cope. Research completed at the University of Virginia Children's Hospital asserts that until these extra conditions or "co-morbidities" are addressed, asthma education programs will not be able to help young patients to the fullest.
