Rotunda To Display Its Glory Once Again

09.20.16

For more than two years, the exterior of the Rotunda steadily and incrementally revealed elements of one of the most significant renovations since its construction. A new dome roof and oculus. Dazzling and durable marble capitals. Intricate, restored woodwork and masonry. Even the University’s most famous timepiece – the Rotunda clock – was completely refurbished.

These were just the beginning.

Behind closed doors, so much more was in constant, careful motion for the past two years, during which the UNESCO World Heritage Site remained closed for the University’s most important capital project.

Now it’s almost time for the full reveal.

Appropriately, classes were among the first uses of the renovated Rotunda, which once again will serve as the heart of University life and student scholarship. The University will host a community celebration later this month, with open houses on Sept. 24 and 25. The Rotunda returns to a normal operating schedule on Sept. 26.

Today, you can enjoy an early glimpse of the fruits of passionate and painstaking restoration of the facility’s interior – not seen by the public for two years – in this UVA Today video.
