The Bigger Picture: Net Gain

There’s a longtime tradition in basketball that when a team wins a championship, it celebrates by cutting the net off a rim. For the University of Virginia men’s basketball program, the scene has become old hat in the best way possible.

Coach Tony Bennett and the Cavaliers defeated the University of Louisville on Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena to clinch a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title. It marks the sixth time in the last 10 seasons that UVA has accomplished such a feat.

Bennett, to a rousing JPJ crowd of 14,149, was the first to clip the net Saturday. His grin said it all. The Wahoos, ranked 13th nationally, are the No. 2 seed for this week’s ACC Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina.
