On the same day The New York Times opined in 1903 that flying machines might be possible in a million to 10 million years, Orville Wright wrote in his diary: “We started assembly today.” That’s the kind of visionary thinking Columbia and the University of Missouri need to have to secure the state’s spot in a rapidly changing global economy, Tom Skalak, vice president for research at the University of Virginia, told a group of community leaders this morning. ... In the 18th century, astronomers used the solar transit of planet Venus to calculate the distance from the Earth to the sun. After the 1882 Venus transit, John Philip Sousa scored a march in its honor. Since it was first predicted in the 17th century, we've only had a chance to view the phenomenon six times. And Tuesday's our day ... Edward Murphy, associate professor of astronomy at the University of Virginia, explains more about the transit in the video.

When Kelly Anderson shed her arm cast two months after a wrist operation, her joints were so stiff she couldn’t turn a doorknob. She didn’t fully recover for another four months. Daniel Amante suffered similar post-cast complications after he injured his knee; Amanda Harton watched her soccer teammates struggle following various injuries; and Clara Tran saw even greater suffering among the frail patients in the nursing home where she volunteered. By the time the four met as undergrads at the University of Virginia, they all recognized a common medical dilemma: Long periods of immobilization he...

By Mark Edmundson, English professor Who hasn't at least once had the feeling of being remade through music? Who is there who doesn't date a new phase in life to hearing this or that symphony or song? I heard it—we say—and everything changed. I heard it, and a gate flew open and I walked through. But does music constantly provide revelation—or does it have some other effects, maybe less desirable? For those of us who teach, the question is especially pressing. Our students tend to spend hours a day plugged into their tunes. Yet, at least in my experience, they are reluctant to talk about music...

Willie Sutton is famously said to have claimed he robbed banks “because that’s where the money is.” Now, in a similar vein, the University of Virginia wants to offer more education courses in Northern Virginia because that’s where the teachers are. UVa has offered a number of courses at its Falls Church center for years, but school officials are hoping to greatly expand those offerings in tandem with an internal shift of which academic unit runs the program. “The Curry School is rethinking its role within the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia’s role within the commonwealth,...
