In Memoriam: Gregory Joseph Canty

Gregory Joseph Canty, a 2012 graduate of the University of Virginia who worked in a U.Va. lab, died Feb. 20 in Charlottesville. He was 22.

Canty earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the U.Va. School of Engineering and Applied Science in May. He was employed in the Health System’s department of pathology in the lab of Robin Felder, associate director of clinical chemistry and former director of the Medical Automation Research Center. Canty was the lead laboratory automation engineer and network administrator. He led a small team in the design of a groundbreaking system for growing cell cultures.

While attending the University, Canty served as a resident adviser for three years. He began working in the Felder lab as an intern in summer 2008, where he distinguished himself as a creative and gifted problem-solver, electronics designer, computer programmer and statistician.

In addition to his work in the lab, Canty enjoyed providing sound engineering support to the Culbreth Theater and flying the radio-controlled blimp at U.Va. basketball games.

Canty’s parents, Lynn Abidin Canty and Gregory A. Canty. are both U.Va. alumni. His grandfather, Richard R. Abidin, is professor emeritus in the Curry School of Education.
