July 25, 2012 — Nominations are due Sept. 19 for the 2012 Thomas Jefferson Awards, the highest honor given to members of the University of Virginia community.

Two awards are given annually. One award, sponsored since 1955 by the Robert Earll McConnell Foundation, recognizes excellence in service to the University. The other award, which was established in 2009 by the Alumni Board of Trustees of the University of Virginia Endowment Fund Inc., recognizes excellence in scholarship.

Nominees should be members of the faculty or senior executive staff who have exemplified in character, work and influence the principles and ideals of Thomas Jefferson, and thus have advanced the objectives for which Jefferson founded the University.
 
Recipients must have served for 15 or more years. Those who are retired are ineligible.

Each award consists of a citation and a cash prize. President Teresa A. Sullivan will present the awards at Fall Convocation, which will be held Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. in the John Paul Jones Arena.

Nominations with supporting documents – resume/curriculum vita, letters – are due by noon on Sept. 19. They should be sent to the chair of the Thomas Jefferson Awards Committee, Leake Cottage, P.O. Box 400139.
