News in Brief: Cadets, Midshipmen Compete on the Playing Fields

And the Navy emerged victorious.

Cadets and midshipmen from the University of Virginia’s three ROTC units met recently in friendly competition on the artificial turf of The Park, meeting in the half-light of a brisk dawn to vie for the Tri-Service Sports Trophy.

Competing in football, soccer and flying disc, cadets and midshipmen went through three rounds of matches, with contests on three fields simultaneously. There was some cross-pollination as the soccer ball occasionally strayed into the flying disc field.

Players from the Navy unit won four of the contests, including one football, two flying disc and one soccer match. The Army came in second place with three victories, one in soccer and two in football. The Air Force command trailed with only one victory, for flying disc, while the Army and Air Force cadets tied in soccer.

For their efforts, the midshipmen brought home the trophy, festooned with models of a battleship, a tank and a fighter plane.
