News in Brief: Cavalier Relay Team Goes the Distance, Wins National Title

It’s been quite a 10-month stretch for the University of Virginia men’s track and field program.

UVA’s distance medley relay team of Wes Porter, Alex Sherman, Conor Murphy and Gary Martin won a national title over the weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach. The victory was the highlight of the Cavaliers’ program-best sixth-place finish at the event.

The race, which was anchored by Martin’s blistering 3 minute, 48.12 second performance for 1,600 meters, adds to what’s been a banner stretch for the Wahoos.

Last May, UVA won its first team Atlantic Coast Conference outdoor championship in program history and, a month later, Shane Cohen won the 800-meter NCAA championship race

The bespectacled Martin has been on a tear lately, most notably his Feb. 8 feat at the Milrose Games in New York, where he ran the ninth-fastest mile ever on an indoor track. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, in addition to his part in the relay win, the junior finished as the runner-up in the 3,000-meter event.

The Cavaliers begin their outdoor track season Saturday when they host the Virginia Opener at Lannigan Field.
