News in Brief: Children’s Literacy Program Honors University Police

A literacy and tutoring organization has named the University of Virginia Police Division its Law Enforcement Partner of the Year.

The honor from the Life Enrichment Center, a nonprofit that seeks to bolster literacy rates of young school children in underserved areas, recognized University Police officers for their tutoring program at Greer Elementary School in Albemarle County. University Police officers have partnered with Life Enrichment Center since 2021, with officers pairing with Greer second-grade students to help raise the students’ reading proficiency.

The Life Enrichment Center also honored Sgt. Wallace Goode for exceptional commitment to his student mentee, Yasin Khalilov.

The Life Enrichment Center has hundreds of tutors across the state, including more than 100 law enforcement officers, according to the organization.
