News in brief: UVA to host alumni, students navigating federal workforce changes

The University of Virginia’s Fairfax campus is expected to host up to 1,000 job-seeking students and current or former federal workers from across the commonwealth Wednesday to help them review career options.

“The VA Universities Career Fair” at UVA Northern Virginia is billed as a networking and jobs event for current students and alumni of UVA, the University of Richmond, George Mason University, James Madison University, Marymount University, Virginia Tech, William & Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The inaugural event, sponsored by the UVA Career Center and UVA Alumni Association, is designed to help alumni of these colleges and universities respond to widespread federal workforce reductions. UVA’s Weldon Cooper Center estimates that 11,100 federal civilian jobs have been “affected by cuts” in Virginia, with another 10,500 positions “potentially at risk.”

“At UVA Northern Virginia, our mission is to connect Northern Virginia’s organizations and communities – including students, alumni and beyond – to the University of Virginia,” Julie Sara Boyd, executive director of UVA Northern Virginia, said. “When we expand that mission to include other universities across the commonwealth and focus on workforce security, our impact grows even stronger.”

The event is open to students and alumni of the participating schools, who can register at the UVA Career Center’s career fair site.
