The University of Virginia won the women’s trophy in the Virginia Polo Fall Invitational Tournament on Sunday, with Texas A&M University taking the men’s trophy. UVA’s polo club, Virginia Polo, hosted the event at the Virginia Polo Center’s outdoor arena.
The women defeated Texas A&M, 13-6, in a hard-fought championship contest. The Cavaliers scored the match’s first goal, but were tied 1-1 at the end of the first chukker. UVA held a slim 4-3 lead after the first half, then pulled away in the second half.
The Texas A&M men’s team eliminated UVA, 12-11, on Saturday. The Hoos overcame a 5-0 deficit at the end of the first chukker to ride to an 11-11 tie with less than a minute remaining, only to have the Aggies score the final goal.
The Cavalier women opened the tournament Wednesday with a lopsided 21-4 victory over the University of Kentucky, which is in a rebuilding year. On Thursday, UVA men put in a strong showing, winning 13-9 over Southern Methodist University.
On Friday, the UVA women won a tough contest against Southern Methodist, a 12-11 nailbiter that saw the Hoos maintain a one-point lead through much of the match.
