News in Brief: Jefferson Scholars Foundation Honors 5 for Excellence

The Jefferson Scholars Foundation is recognizing five University of Virginia faculty members with its 2025 Excellence in Teaching Awards.

The foundation named faculty from the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, School of Medicine and the School of Engineering and Applied Science as honorees and will award a total of $25,000 to the winners.

“These professors do more than teach. They inspire,” Ben Skipper, vice president and director of the foundation’s undergraduate programs, said. “Their impact extends beyond the classroom through groundbreaking research and meaningful outreach, embodying the scholarship, leadership and citizenship that define our mission.”

Nate Adams, Jianhua “J.C.” Cang and Ilse Cleeves from the College and Dr. Neeral Shah from the School of Medicine received Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Daniel Quinn from the Engineering School earned the Hartfield Excellence in Teaching Award.

For more than two decades, the foundation, known for its merit-based scholarships, has awarded approximately $650,000 to more than 85 UVA faculty members across multiple schools. Foundation President Jimmy Wright emphasized the faculty’s role in maintaining UVA’s academic excellence: “Attracting top students requires an exceptional faculty, and we’re proud to recognize their dedication and impact,” he said.
