News in brief: UVA Veterans Day ceremony canceled

The University of Virginia’s Veterans Day ceremony scheduled for Friday – which also typically includes a 24-hour ROTC vigil to honor prisoners of war and those still missing in action – has been canceled because of the ongoing government shutdown.

U.S. Air Force Col. Cary Mittelmark, commander of UVA’s Air Force ROTC program, informed University leaders that the event could not be held while the government is shut down.

“This joint ceremony is a valued tradition for each UVA ROTC program, reflecting our shared commitment to those who have served and honoring those who came before us,” Mittelmark wrote. “We look forward to celebrating their legacy together at future events.”
