News In Brief: Dance Takes Center Stage at the Rotunda

Strong rhythm, intricate footwork and quick turns were on display on the University of Virginia Lawn last week as members of the University Salsa Club showcased their love of dance through a pop-up event on the Rotunda’s terrace.

Open to UVA students, faculty and staff, the club offers weekly dance lessons in addition to performances throughout the year. During the weekly lessons, club members learn several types of dances, including bachata, cha-cha and merengue.

Fourth-year student Sofia Posadas, the club’s president, joined after learning about the club at the Student Activities Fair during her first year at UVA. She saw it as a way to connect with her family.

“I decided to join because my parents danced salsa growing up, and I really admired it. I didn’t learn at home, but I decided to surprise them,” Posadas said. “I invited them to the showcase in November, and that’s when they found out, and we’ve been bonding over it ever since.”
