News in Brief: UVA Celebrates 200 Years of Classes With Cake, A Cappella and Festivities

Two centuries ago, five professors and a handful of students walked through the doors of the University of Virginia for the first time, with classes beginning on March 7, 1825.

Fast forward 200 years, and the University’s bicentennial celebration is in full swing.

UVA’s birthday bash began Monday with an open house at Carr’s Hill, complete with a Rotunda-shaped cake created by the cake wizards at The Sweet Stop in Richmond and performances from UVA a cappella groups the Sil’Hooettes and the Hullabahoos.

Other events included in the weeklong celebration are a “Run With Jim” Wednesday with UVA President Jim Ryan and a “Celebration on the Lawn” Thursday that will include food trucks, a Shenandoah Joe coffee pop-up, lawn games, a photo booth and giveaways.
