University creates provost search website, encourages community input

The University of Virginia’s Executive Search Group, which is leading a nationwide recruitment for UVA’s next provost and executive vice president, has created a website where prospective candidates can apply and where University community members can nominate candidates. There is also a survey for members of the University community to offer input on the process.

The position of provost – the University’s top academic officer – has been open since Ian Baucom accepted the presidency of Middlebury College in Vermont earlier this year. Brie Gertler, then the vice provost, stepped in as interim provost after Baucoum's departure. A previous nationwide search to fill the post was unsuccessful. Gertler remains in the interim role.

The new search began in earnest in early September when University leaders appointed a 14-person search committee to oversee the recruitment. Darden School of Business Dean Scott Beardsley chairs the committee.

“I am excited to work alongside colleagues and our community in identifying UVA’s next provost,” Beardsley said. “This is a pivotal moment for the University and we sincerely seek input and nominations from faculty, staff, students and alumni. Together, we will find a leader who embodies our values, champions academic excellence and freedom, and will help guide UVA into its next great chapter.”

Beardsley said there are several ways for the University community to assist in the process.
