UVA launches nationwide search for next provost

The University of Virginia is launching a nationwide search for its next executive vice president and provost, a position that serves as the institution’s chief academic officer.

The position of provost has been vacant since spring, when Ian Baucom departed Charlottesville to become president of Middlebury College in Vermont. UVA embarked on a provost search earlier this year but was not successful in filling the position. Brie Gertler is currently serving in the role.

“Brie has generously agreed to continue serving as interim executive vice president and provost while we search for a permanent replacement, and for that I am appreciative,” UVA interim President Paul Mahoney said.

Mahoney, himself an interim leader who began serving after former UVA President Jim Ryan resigned in June, has said he intends “to hit the ground running,” including filling the University’s several interim positions.

“I am committed to recruiting and hiring highly qualified leaders to serve the students, faculty and staff at this University,” Mahoney said. “I hope to set the tone with an outstanding hire for the position of provost.”

Mahoney has assembled a search committee of 14 members from across the University under the leadership of Scott Beardsley, dean of the Darden School of Business. Beardsley and the search committee will be supported by the University’s Executive Search Group.

The other search committee members include:

  • Peter Abramenko, mathematics professor and member of the UVA Faculty Senate
  • Maïté Brandt-Pearce, vice provost for faculty affairs
  • Jim Donovan, adjunct law professor and vice chairman of global client coverage at Goldman Sachs
  • John Duffy, law professor
  • Ken Elzinga, economics professor
  • Richard Evans, senior associate dean for research services and support
  • Dr. Kristen Greene, urologist and chair of the Department of Urology
  • John Kosky, vice president and chief human resources officer
  • John Owen IV, politics professor
  • Zachary Palazzotto, undergraduate student and president of the Engineering Student Council
  • Stephanie Rowley, dean of the School of Education and Human Development
  • Douglas Taylor, biology professor and chair of the Department of Biology
  • Porter Wilkinson, vice rector of the Board of Visitors
