News in Brief: UVA’s Newest Students Are Front and Center on ‘NBC Nightly News’

Introducing the regular “NBC Nightly News” segment, “There’s Good News Tonight,” national news correspondent José Díaz-Balart said, “You know, so often the good news doesn’t get as much attention as the bad.

“So, every Saturday, we highlight the many people who spread joy and love,” he continued. Then he started rolling the tape of ecstatic high schoolers, screaming themselves hoarse.

“Across the country,” Díaz-Balart said Saturday, “surprise after surprise. Bright futures ahead for high school students finding out they got into the colleges of their dreams.”

Five of the featured students are headed to the University of Virginia in August. They first shared their jubilation with UVA Today in December, when they were admitted to the Class of 2029 during UVA’s early decision cycle, agreeing to enroll in exchange for extra-early notifications. The NBC segment starts at the 12:24 mark.

Stay tuned for UVA’s remaining admissions phases. Students who applied for early action will be notified by Feb. 15. Regular decision applicants will receive their news by May 1.
